More than 30 years ago, the use of fibreglass and resin to build boats revolutionized the marine manufacturing process.
Renown for high strength, durability and presumed low maintenance, fibreglass was deemed to be almost indestructible. In the early 70s, it was rumoured that fibreglass boats were being devoured by polyestermites.
Those in the know compared these glass-eating bugs to the teredos worm, the nemesis of wooden boat owners. It was discovered to be a hoax; although perhaps the mites creators forewarned of what we now call osmosis. . . . .
During the spring clean-up of this 1981 28' Trendsetter pleasure craft we
noticed that the fibreglass laminate on one of the boat's Deck Hatch
Covers was de-laminating from the plywood.
In addition, to the
de-lamination, the edge of the plywood was stating to erode and look
ratty. Our first thought was to use some epoxy to re-attach the
laminate to the plywood.The Boys at Industrial Plastics & Paints
suggested that I simply replace the hatch with one made of King
Starboard.
