GELCOATS, PUTTY, & FILLERS
|
Many marine craft are manufactured using composite materials. The outer layer is often a gelcoat, typically 0.5mm - 0.8mm in thickness. Gelcoats are designed to be durable, providing resistance to ultraviolet degradation and hydrolysis. The gelcoat will often carry a pigment that provides the finish colour to the moulded item. Specialised gelcoats can be used to manufacture the moulds which in turn are used to manufacture components. These require very high levels of durability to overcome the mechanical and thermal stresses encountered during the curing and demoulding processes.

WAXED GELCOAT
A surface coat providing a cosmetic enhancement and exposure improvements to a fiberglass laminate. All IPP gelcoats are isophthalic resin based. Stock colors are White, Off White, Gray and Neutral (colorless) and are a brushing viscosity. Custom colors and special matches are available in 22kg minimum order. Requires M.E.K.P catalyst. Size 1litre, 4 litre, 5 gallon.

UNWAXED GELCOAT
A surface coat providing a cosmetic enhancement and exposure improvements to a fibreglass laminate. Usually used when building a mold as the coating that goes on the mold before the fibreglass laminate is applied. All IPP gelcoats are isophthalic resin based. Stock colors are White and Neutral (colorless) and are a brushing viscosity. Custom colors and special matches are available in 22kg minimum order. Requires M.E.K.P catalyst. BLACK TOOLING GELCOAT
Black tooling gelcoat is designed to give ultimate strength and cure value to fiberglass mold surfaces. Tooling gelcoat provides a harder surface enabling it to withstand heat generated from the molding process. Requires M.E.K.P catalyst. Size 1 litre, 4 litre, 5 gallon. |

POLYESTER COLOUR PASTE
IPP polyester color pigments are used for tinting polyester resins and gelcoats. Pigments are added to the resin prior to the addition of catalyst. These colours can be mixed together to produce almost and shade that you require. Colour paste is usually added at a ratio of 6-8% by weight or 60 ml paste to 1 litre of gelcoat.

DURATEC VINYLESTER PRIMER
A high quality primer for composite marine surfaces. Used for one-off and production composite yacht priming and osmosis and blister repairs. Formulated for below waterline and topside and deck applications. It is easily applied with sprayer, roller or brush. High build up to 40 mils, 1000 microns, wet on wet, without sagging on vertical surfaces. Rapid curing - primer will be ready to sand in 1 - 4 hours depending on thickness and temperature. DURATEC SURFACE PRIMER
Duratec Surface Primer is a high quality polyester surface primer that provides outstanding filling and levelling properties for many varied substrates. Excellent adhesion is achieved with fibreglass, metal, wood, pressboard, brick, concrete and polyurethane foam. It offers rapid coat build-up to 50 mils wet on wet for plugs and master mold surfacing; the easily sanded primer cures to a surface that polishes to a high gloss if required. Duratec surface primer adheres to epoxy resins, and with a heat distortion level in excess of 200°F it is an excellent surface for vacuum forming molds. Available in Black or Grey. DURATEC CLEAR HIGH GLOSS ADDITIVE
Use Duratec Polyester Clear High Gloss Additive to repair clear or pigmented gelcoated FRP parts. The end result is a low porosity, smooth, high gloss, hard surface that is similar to the original gelcoat surface. Duratec Polyester Clear High Gloss Additive also upgrades tooling gelcoats. Used correctly, the additive will reduce subsurface porosity and orange peel, increase impact resistance, improve gloss retention and heat distortion temperatures. Just blend and mix equal parts of Duratec Polyester Clear High Gloss Additive and the gelcoat and catalyze at 2% with MEKP catalyst. Thin 5-15% if necessary to a desired spray viscosity with MEK solvent or a fast acrylic lacquer thinner. Requires M.E.K.P catalyst. Sizes 4 litre

POLYFAIR F26
Poly-Fair F26 is a waterproof. low density polyester-based fairing compound formulated for the marine environment. It has excellent adhesion to cured fibre-reinforced polyester and vinylester laminates. It sands easily, gives a hard finish after a full cure, yet is not brittle and has good impact strength. It is also a suitable base for all marine finishes such as polyester, urethane and epoxy paints. Requires MEKP Catalyst. Poly-Fair F26 is only sold in a 19 liter (5 gal) pail. |

POLY-BOND B46F
Poly-Bond B46F is a polyester-based, glass reinforced waterproof adhesive developed for the marine industry. Typical applications a re hull-to-deck joints, bonding of interior liners and engine stringers, strake fillers, and fillers for rudders and keels. Poly-Bond B46F is non sagging, light weight, 100% waterproof, has excellent impact strength, low exotherm, low shrinkage, is Glassfibre reinforced for greater cohesive strength and comes with a colored BPO paste for easier mixing. CORE-BOND
Core-Bond is a specially formulated polyester-based core bedding compound developed for both hand-layup and vacuum bag core installation. Lightweight and non sagging, Core-Bond is supplied with its own pigmented BPO catalyst and is formulated to the degree of elasticity required for the core to skin interface. With a shrinkage of less than 1%. Core-Bond significantly reduces the possibility of print through. You must always prime the core surface with polyester resin and catalyst to provide a thorough cure and good cohesion. Core-bond is only sold in a 19 liter(5 gal) pail.

ECONOFIL - Talc
Econofil - Industrial Talc, is a magnesium hydroxide powder and is the most economical filler. It is an additive used to thicken all types of resins and gelcoats and is easily applied and sanded.

PROFIL - Microspheres
Profil - Glass bubbles is a hollow silicone dioxide powder. It is a non-absorbent additive used to extend all types of resins and gelcoats. it can be used in resins alone; however, its main use is to be used in conjunction with other fillers to create easy to sand compounds.

ANITSAG - Cab-o-sil
Cab-o-sil is light weight, low density fumed silica powder additive for use in all types of resins and gelcoats although, when used to thicken polyester or vinylester resins, creates an excellent medium sanding, non-slumping compound.

INTERFIBRE
Interfibe is a treated cellulose fiber and is the replacement filler for asbestos. It is an economical additive for all types of resins and gelcoats to create a hard to sand, gap filling, bedding and filleting compound.

MINI FIBRES
Mini Fibers are dense, ground polyethylene fibers. It is an additive for all types of resins and gelcoats although, when used to thicken epoxy resins, it creates and excellent medium sanding, non-slumping compound.

1/4" CHOPPED STRAND
Chopped Strand is actual strands of fiberglass chopped into 1/4" lengths. It can be added to any type of resin or gelcoat alone or in combination with other fillers where strength is required.

MILLED FIBRES
Milled Fibers are ground fiberglass fibers. They will add moderate strength to any type of resin or gelcoat alone, or in combination with other fillers.

ULTRA VIOLET ABSORBER
Ultra Violet Absorber is a mica powder used as an additive for clear coats to block ultra violet rays.

WOOD FLOUR
Wood Flour is a fine sawdust that has been filtered so that there are no surprise lumps to be found. Wood Flour is excellent for creating glues and structural fillers and fillets. It is a fibrous filler that is also thixotropic. To make a smoother fillet add a small amount of Cabosil or Glass Bubbles.
