CATALYST & PROMOTERS

Polyester resins are thermosetting; this means that the plastic softens when initially heated, but sets permanently rigid once it has cooled (as opposed to "thermoplastics", which re-soften with heat). Polyester resin is purchased in liquid form for the production of glass-reinforced plastic catalysed, typically with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) (also known as butanone peroxide) to initiate the polymerization reaction.

 Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide
MEKP is an organic peroxide needed to initiate the cure of polyester resins and gelcoats. Available sizes 15 ml, 60 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 1 gal.

Promoter "W"
A specially formulated additive that can be mixed with polyester resin and gelcoat to speed both gel time and cure time in cooler temperatures. After adding Promoter "W" always allow a minimum of 1/2 hr for resin to sit before adding catalyst. Available Sizes 55 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre

 Cobalt Promoter
Used as an additive to speed up both gel time and cure time of polyester resin and gelcoat, but not to the same extent of Promoter "W". After adding Cobalt always allow a minimum of 1/2 hr for resin to sit before adding catalyst.
Available Sizes 55 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 4 litre

DMA Promoter
For use in speeding up gel time only where a fast gel time is needed to avoid slumping but a longer curing time to avoid shrinkage. After adding DMA always allow a minimum of 1/2 hr for resin to sit before adding catalyst. Available Sizes 55 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 4 litre

 BPO Paste
This catalyst is needed to initiate the cure of marble bonding resin (FT-152) and most automotive putties (eg. Bondo, etc.) Available Sizes 1 oz, 4 oz, 500 ml, 3.6 kg
 Air Dry Additive
An additive used to convert unwaxed polyester resins and gelcoats into a waxed product, enabling them to cure to a hard, tack-free surface. Available Sizes 55 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 4 litre, 5 gal
